Aztecs Vow To Bounce Back From First Loss

Jan 29, 2011 12:25 PM

No. 9 Brigham Young handed No. 4 San Diego State their first loss of the season on Wednesday night.

The Aztecs are now vowing to start another lengthy winning streak.

“You better be able to do that. Forgive but don’t forget,” coach Steve Fisher said Friday. “We can do nothing about 43 points by Fredette. We’ve got to say, ‘What can we do to get a win against Wyoming?’ and we’ll have another opportunity. Hopefully, it’ll be as significant leading into it as it was this week.”

San Diego State will face Wyoming on Saturday and have a rematch against Brigham Young on Feb. 26.

Over Two Dozen NBA Scouts Watch Fredette's 43 Knock Off Aztecs

Jan 27, 2011 1:33 AM

With over two dozen NBA scouts in attendance to watch Jimmer Fredette and Kawhi Leonard, BYU defeated San Diego State by a final score of 71-58.

Both players showed why they are projected first round picks in the 2011 NBA Draft.

Fredette scored 43 points for BYU, 20 of which came in a frenetic first half. Fredette was 14-for-24 from the floor, 5-for-8 from distance and 10-for-11 at the free throw line. He scored in a multitude of ways and against a variety of very athletic SDSU defenders.

Leonard, meanwhile, scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. The 6-7 sophomore had nine offensive rebounds, most of them coming amongst a crowd of BYU defenders. The strength of Leonard's hands and overall motor on the glass is truly elite and he showed it with his season high in the category.

Mountain West schools haven't had multiple first round picks in the same draft since 1999 when Andre Miller (Utah), Shawn Marion (UNLV) and Kenny Thomas (New Mexico) were selected 8th, 9th and 22nd. Lamar Odom was also drafted 4th overall in 1999 out of Rhode Island, but began his collegiate career with UNLV.

Aztecs Poised For Perfect Season?

Jan 25, 2011 3:46 PM

If San Diego State is able to beat Brigham Young on Wednesday night, it's possible that the Aztecs could go undefeated.

There are only two undefeated teams left in Division I basketball with the NCAA Tournament roughly four weeks away.

The Aztecs are ranked fourth in both major polls.

San Diego State will have 10 regular-season games left after Wednesday's battle, including another matchup with BYU on Feb. 26. They could conceivably play BYU again in the conference tournament.

Fredette, Gay Highlight BYU, SDSU Showdown

Jan 25, 2011 3:40 PM

The battle between Brigham Young and San Diego State will be highlighted by the individual matchip between Jimmer Fredette and D.J. Gay.

"It's going to be crazy,'' Fredette said of Wednesday night's showdown between No. 4 San Diego State and No. 9 BYU. "If we play well, our crowd will be into it. We need our crowd to rattle them a little bit. But it's going to be a great one."

San Diego State is 20-0 and BYU is 19-1, while both are 5-0 in the Mountain West Conference.

As different as Fredette and Gay are, both point guards make their teams go.

"I think it will be a back-and-forth game between the two,'' said BYU forward Noah Hartsock.

"With San Diego State having a great front line, the (media) might overlook D.J., but he's a tremendous player. He's really one of the great team leaders and great energizers.''

Leonard Reminds Fisher Of Chris Webber

Jan 20, 2011 3:47 PM

Kawhi Leonard had 10 points, 10 rebounds, blocked two shots and had three steals in San Diego State's 68-55 win over Air Force. San Diego State now has 20 wins and zero losses.

“He’s going to play in the NBA,” Aztecs coach Steve Fisher said Wednesday night. “It’s a question of when.”

“Biggest hands I’ve ever seen,” said Aztecs forward Billy White.

“He reminds me of Chris Webber,” Fisher said, “not only with the size (of his hands), but the sureness of them. He doesn’t lose many balls that he gets a hand on.”

“He’s got great instincts,” New Mexico coach Steve Alford said Monday on the Mountain West’s weekly conference call. “He’s got a great basketball IQ. His shooting has improved. He has a much more aggressive demeanor this year. He takes smaller guards to the post. If he has someone bigger (on him), they’re playing some point-forward more this year and that makes for a difficult matchup. And you have to block him out on every attempt.”

“I will act as a sounding board for him,” Fisher said. “I think I can get him surer feedback than anybody … Then he’ll have a decision to make.”

Fisher Considers Air Force Much Improved

Jan 19, 2011 8:22 PM

San Diego State came into Wednesday's game against Air Force undefeated, but were showing their opponent a great deal of respect.

“We’re playing a team (tonight), and this is not coach talk, that is so much better than the Air Force team we’ve seen the last two years,” head coach Steve Fisher said. “They’re a very, very good basketball team that’s confident with 10 victories, having beaten Utah, having led UNLV for the majority of the game and they will be coming in, as we, with an intent on doing whatever they have to do to win.”

SDSU Feels Like They 'Can Play With Anyone'

Jan 19, 2011 5:00 PM

San Diego State is one of only three teams without a loss in Division I men's basketball.

"We feel like we can play with anybody," forward Kawhi Leonard said.

It was revealed on Monday that the Aztecs are ranked No. 6 in the nation, which didn't sit well with fans.

"It says we have a very special team and our fans notice it," senior point guard D.J. Gay said. "When they’re down that we didn’t move up, that just shows that the backing that we have from this city and it’s something special."

SDSU is 19-0 and has at least five résumé victories (Gonzaga and New Mexico on the road, St. Mary’s, Wichita State and UNLV at home).

“I’m not surprised at all,” Gay said. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do.”
